InterContinental Koh Samui prepares to elevate its luxury appeal with a new chapter

The iconic InterContinental Koh Samui Resort, a former pioneer of luxury on Thailand’s popular island, is set to expand its offerings and reinforce its status as a premier destination for privacy, scenic vistas, and refined island living, amid Koh Samui's rising global profile.

What began in 1993 as Koh Samui’s first luxury resort is now preparing for another chapter, with InterContinental Koh Samui Resort building on a reputation that has long drawn travellers to the island’s quiet south-west coast. Set in Taling Ngam, the property has become known for its sunset views, wedding backdrops and low-key escape from the busier parts of Samui, while still carrying the distinction of being one of the island’s original five-star addresses.

The resort’s history helps explain its appeal. According to IHG, the InterContinental brand took over management of the then Baan Taling Ngam Resort & Spa in 2011, reintroducing it as a 79-room property after an extensive refurbishment. That move brought a more polished international identity to a hotel already rooted in one of the island’s most scenic settings.

For guests, the main draw remains the location. InterContinental’s own hotel information describes a 22-acre beachfront retreat with cliffside and beach villas, private plunge pools and wide views across the Five Islands and Angthong National Park. The setting is designed for travellers who want space, sea views and a strong sense of privacy rather than the livelier atmosphere found on Koh Samui’s eastern beaches.

The timing also works in the island’s favour. In 2026, Travel + Leisure readers voted Koh Samui the world’s best island, while separate rankings from the magazine also placed it top among luxury island destinations in the Asia-Pacific region. That surge in recognition has been linked to the island’s beaches, dining, wellness appeal and wider profile boost from "The White Lotus", making long-established resorts such as InterContinental Koh Samui increasingly relevant for visitors seeking a polished but distinctly Thai island stay.
