Ordering Thai food with dietary needs

  • "Gin jay" — the Thai vegan tradition. A yellow-and-red flag over a stall means no meat, egg, fish sauce or shrimp paste.
  • "Mai sai nam pla" — no fish sauce. "Mai sai gapi" — no shrimp paste. Both hide in curries, papaya salad and even fried rice.
  • Jain travellers should call ahead: Indian kitchens in Bangkok, Pattaya and Phuket will usually cook without onion and garlic given a few hours' notice.
  • Halal food is widely available in Bangkok's Nana area, Phuket's Muslim fishing villages and across the south.
