Visiting ThailandA guide for the Indian traveller — where and when to go, how to get there, up to the minute news and reviews

Hyatt has redefined its The Barai property in Hua Hin from a celebrated spa to an exclusive retreat emphasising restoration, Thai heritage, and tranquil coastal luxe, as it joins the Hyatt Unbound Collection.
Along Hua Hin’s Khao Takiap coastline, a stretch long associated with Thai royalty and steady Gulf breezes, The Barai has evolved from a celebrated spa into a small-scale retreat aimed at travellers who want both beach access and a sense of calm. Hyatt now places the property in its Unbound Collection, and the emphasis remains firmly on restoration rather than spectacle.
The setting is one of its strongest draws. Architect Lek Mathar Bunnag has shaped the resort around shaded walkways, courtyards and reflective water features, with the forest pool and the beach pool giving the property two distinct moods: inward-looking and seaside. Hyatt says the design is inspired by ancient barays, or reservoirs, and by the four elements of earth, water, air and fire, a concept that runs through both the architecture and the wellness offering.
Accommodation is generous by resort standards, with 98 rooms and suites, including suites with large terraces and some with private plunge pools. Details such as soaking tubs, rainforest showers, balconies and butler service in the top categories make the property feel more like a private hideaway than a conventional hotel. For guests wanting a longer stay, the larger suites also include spa-treatment space, steam rooms and daily breakfast, while the wider resort environment is designed to keep the mood unhurried.
The spa remains the heart of the experience. Hyatt describes The Barai Spa as an award-winning sanctuary, and the adjoining Wellness Hub adds yoga, fitness and personalised consultations focused on sleep, longevity and emotional wellbeing. Dining follows the same quietly polished tone, with Chef Benn Rowe overseeing White Cottage and McFarland House, where seafood and local flavours are paired with the resort’s heritage setting. For travellers, the appeal is clear: this is a Hua Hin stay that combines beachside ease, serious wellness credentials and a distinctly Thai sense of place.
